Short answer
Microsoft Power BI is our top pick among the 7 business intelligence tools we ranked, scoring 92/100. Paid plans start at $14/user/mo.
Microsoft Power BI (92/100): best overall and best value for most companies.
Tableau (83/100): best for visual analysis and dedicated analyst teams.
Qlik Cloud Analytics (82/100): best for large audiences priced by data, not seats.
Metabase (81/100): best open-source option for SQL-friendly teams.
Zoho Analytics (80/100): best for small businesses that report on their business apps.
Business intelligence (BI) tools connect to your databases, spreadsheets and business apps, model the data and turn it into dashboards and reports people can filter and share. Every tool here builds charts and dashboards, so the differences are in how they charge (per user, per role, per data capacity or by usage credits), what the free version can share, how much data a plan holds and which plan adds row-level security, embedding and SSO.
We scored seven BI tools on six weighted criteria. For each one we list the free option, the entry paid price and billing basis, and the plan where governance and embedding start.
Starting prices are the cheapest paid plan on each vendor's pricing page on Nov 3, 2026. Units differ: Power BI and Data Studio Pro charge per user; Tableau per user by role (Creator, Explorer, Viewer), billed annually only; Metabase, Zoho Analytics and Qlik charge a monthly plan price that includes a set number of users or data; Domo is credit-based. Zoho Analytics prices are from its help center and its own plan comparison, because its pricing page loads prices dynamically. Data Studio was called Looker Studio until 2026.

Business intelligence (BI) tools connect to databases, spreadsheets and business apps, model the data into consistent metrics, and present it as interactive dashboards and reports. Analysts build the models and dashboards; everyone else filters, drills down and gets scheduled reports or alerts, with permissions controlling who sees which rows.
Key features to look for
Data connectors. Built-in connections to databases, warehouses, files and SaaS apps, with scheduled refreshes.
Data modeling. Relationships, calculated measures and a shared semantic layer so every report uses the same numbers.
Dashboards and visualizations. Interactive charts, filters and drill-downs that people can explore without writing queries.
Sharing and governance. Workspaces, row-level security, SSO and audit logs that control who sees what.
AI and natural language queries. Ask questions in plain English, get suggested insights and automated summaries.
